Who runs these guidebook drills
Drills for the lookup a first responder makes from a placard, an orange panel or a shipping paper: the identification number, the orange guide, the isolation distance. Placardset is the work of a single independent developer and has no fire service, regulator or training provider behind it.
What you practise here
The daily drill shows you a placard or a paper, asks for each step of the lookup and grades it against the printed page the answer comes from. The lookup searches the 2,771 rows of the yellow index, 522 of them highlighted, in the order the book is searched. All of it runs in your browser.
The one book the rows come from
Every row was entered from the 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook, a 392 page book, and the repository keeps the SHA-256 digest of the exact English PDF it was typed from. Hazard classes come from the hazardous materials table in 49 CFR 172.101. Neither document is reproduced or shipped here; the footer links the official pages for the current edition.
Names on the guides
Guides are published as Placardset, with no individual byline on any of them. Where the structured data asks for an author, it names the Placardset organization. No responder, technician or instructor is named anywhere on the site. A guide shows the day its wording last changed.
One developer, several sites
The developer behind Placardset also runs Rinkclock, for hockey timekeeping; TrimCase, for engine fuel trim cases; Cuedrill, for stage management cue calling; and Endbook, for archery club records. Sharing an author lends none of them any authority on hazardous materials.
What this site cannot do
It is a training aid. At a real incident you follow the current printed guidebook and your employer's emergency plan, not this site. It may be an edition behind: the guidebook is revised on a four year cycle, and until a new edition is entered the rows here describe the old one. It does not know your jurisdiction, and it cannot tell what is actually inside the container in front of you.
A certificate of practice counts sessions saved or imported in this browser. It is not a qualification and no training body has approved it.
To see how a lookup is reasoned, start with the path from a number to a guide or how isolation distances are read.
